The second annual European Cycling Challenge kicks off on 1 May, and has 39 cities taking part. The idea is that riders log their miles (or kilometres) using a simple smartphone app and these are added up to make a leaderboard of the longest-riding cities on the continent. You can also upload your GPS tracks direct to the website if you prefer.
As well as a bit of friendly rivalry that might encourage people to cycle more, the challenge also lets the cities gather a bit of data about the make-up of their cycling population. If you like the idea, or if you’re already a compulsive mile-counter, head to the Better By Bike website to sign up, or search for #ecc2015eu on Twitter.
